Eric's Position on Climate Change
Science has more than proven that global climate change is a real and present danger to future generations. The subsequent logical step is to make significant and immediate changes to our policies with the purpose of protecting our environment. While many Big Oil insiders insist that climate change is not a reality or is merely the result of natural cycles, it is clear that human activity is the primary cause of this environmental phenomenon. This is not an issue of left versus right, liberal versus conservative, or Democrat versus Republican. This is an issue of saving our planet and we simply cannot play politics with the facts.

To address these real world problems, I propose the following real world solutions:

1. Raise the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for vehicle emissions to 50 miles per gallon by no later than 2020. We have the technology to create improved American made hybrids right now and it is time for us to leverage our advantages. Big Oil lobbyists do not want a change in policy which is why they will have no part in my Congressional campaign.

2. End government subsidies for Big Oil and gas companies as they make record profits at the pump. In 2005, Exxon-Mobil's retiring CEO received a $400 million retirement bonus - all the while, George Bush's rubberstamps in Congress continued handing our tax dollars to Big Oil. It's time to stop rewarding Big Oil with our tax dollars for ripping us off at the pumps.

3. Invest in clean energy sources. The solution to these problems can be solved by steadily progressing from outmoded fossil fuels to more efficient biofuels. Right here in New York's 29th Congressional District we can grow switchgrass, a plant that has the ability to produces enzymatic ethanol. Scientists have concluded that enzymatic ethanol, like that produced from switchgrass, is significantly more efficient, producing higher yields than corn-based ethanol. In addition, the use of this type of "second generation biofuel" will drastically reduce global warming pollution. Further, we can leverage the savings from ending Big Oil subsidies to provide incentives to build and buy fuel efficient, American made hybrid cars.

4. Instate a Renewable Portfolio Standard. Renewables are another integral aspect of a comprehensive solution. By increasing our use of renewable energy from the sun, crops, and additional renewable sources, we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and ensure a more secure energy future for our nation. To get there, we need to set real goals with real deadlines.

Our planet needs to be at the forefront of every politicians mind. This is an issue which requires our full and immediate attention. Enough debating and politicking, it is time to forget party lines and affiliations. We need to act now to preserve the future.
